Why should I get screened?
Getting screened regularly with mammography is important because Cancer can be found early when it is less likely to have spread to other parts of the body. Treatment may also have a better chance of working when breast cancer is found early.
Talk to your family doctor or nurse practitioner for more information about the benefits and limitations of screening with mammography.
What happens after the test?
Normal Results – The Ontario Breast Screening Program will send you a letter with your results and when to get screened again. Please make sure to advise your family doctor of your result.
Abnormal Results – If you have an abnormal screening result, your Ontario Breast Screening Program location will notify your family doctor or nurse practitioner as well as yourself to schedule a timely follow-up appointment. If you have an abnormal mammogram, and do not have a family doctor or nurse practitioner, we will assign you to a doctor who will follow you to diagnosis. Most women with an abnormal mammogram do not have breast cancer. More tests are needed after an abnormal mammogram to find out whether a woman has cancer. These tests may include more mammography, breast ultrasound, breast magnetic resonance imaging and/or biopsies.
If you are diagnosed with breast cancer, you will be referred to a specialist for further care and management.
How long will it take to get my test results?
