General Information

An echocardiogram is a non-invasive procedure that uses sound waves (ultrasound) to evaluate how well the heart is working. Your doctor may suggest an echocardiogram if problems with the valves or chambers of your heart or if heart problems are the cause of symptoms such as shortness of breath or chest pain.  The images from an echocardiogram will also help to identify heart disease.

This test will help your doctor to evaluate:

  • how well the heart is moving,
  • how well the valves are working, and,
  • the size of the heart and its pumping chambers (ventricles).

The test will take approximately 45 minutes.
