General Information

X-rays allow for a painless, quick evaluation, often detecting diseases in the early stages, where the chance for recovery is improved. The most common use of x-rays is to detect fractures and other abnormalities of bone, joint disease and lung disease.

We conduct the following types of general x-rays:

  • Chest – thorax – abdomen
  • Head and neck
  • Joints
  • Lower limb
  • Spine and pelvis
  • Upper limb

Unlike most forms of radiation, x-rays can pass through body tissue, making it possible to provide images of internal structures. During the procedure, electromagnetic radiation passes through the body onto imaging plates. Dense structures, such as bone, absorb the most radiation and appear white on the developed image. Structures that are less dense appear in lighter shades of gray and black.  The amount of radiation you get from an x-ray is small. A basic x-ray gives out a radiation dose similar to the amount of radiation you’re naturally exposed to from the environment over the course of a week or two.

If you are pregnant, or suspect that you may be, you should tell your physician or technologist before the test is performed, as special precautions may have to be taken.

Children & X-rays – to protect parents from exposure to radiation, it is best if the parent does not go into the exam room. If your child wants a parent present, or needs help remaining still for the x-ray, you will be given a lead apron so you can assist. If you are pregnant, however you will not be allowed to enter the exam room and another adult would need to be available if your child needs assistance during the x-ray.
