Preparing for your Ultrasound
There are different types of ultrasound tests. Some tests will require no preparation, some will require you to drink large amounts of liquid prior to the test, and others will require you to not eat or drink for hours before the test. Please review the test preparations for the type of ultrasound you are referred for.
- Please refrain from wearing scented products (due to patients and employees with allergies) and wear clothing that is easily removed if necessary.
- Wear loose comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons or belts. Metal can interfere with the test results.
- You may also be asked to remove your clothing and wear a gown.
- Please remove items that may interfere with the exam such as jewelry (earrings, necklaces), glasses, removable dental work like dentures (upper spine), button rings (lower spine), nylons, tensor bandages, and splints (unless otherwise advised by your doctor).
- Please let the Technologist know about any Joint or Dental implants you may have.
- Please leave valuables at home as we do not have a secure location to store these items. Do not leave valuables in our changerooms – take them into the testing room with you.
Pelvic Ultrasound
- Drink 1 litre of water with specific start and stop times depending on your scheduled appointment time. You may not use the washroom until your test is completed. You must have a full bladder for this exam. The full bladder serves as a window to see your pelvic organs (i.e. uterus, ovaries or prostate). Without a full bladder it is difficult to see them.
Abdominal Ultrasound
- Nothing to eat or drink except water for 8 hours before your exam. This reduces the amount of gas in your abdomen that obstructs the abdominal organs when present. Eating triggers the digestive system to take effect. This causes the gallbladder to contract, preventing the technologist from seeing abnormalities such as gallstones.
Obstetrical Ultrasound
- This exam requires a partially full bladder. Please drink 500ml (16 oz) of juice 45 minutes prior to your appointment time. DO NOT empty your bladder until after the examination. If your bladder is not full, the examination may have to be rescheduled. Eat regular meals and/or have a snack 30 minutes prior to appointment time.
