Preparing for your Pulmonary Function Test
- No caffeine for 2 hours prior to the test.
- If you smoke, don’t smoke for about 12 hours before the test.
- Do not eat a big meal before the test.
- Do not take inhalers or lung medicines for the following times:
- short-acting inhaled or oral
- bronchodilators (salbutamol) – 8 hours
- long-acting inhaled or oral bronchodilators (SereVent) – 24 hours
- twice a day theophylline (Slobid) – 24 hours
- once-daily theophylline.
- Please refrain from wearing scented products (due to patients and employees with allergies) and wear clothing that is easily removed if necessary.
- Wear loose comfortable clothing.
- Certain parts of the test will require you to blow as hard as you can into the handheld device, which can cause you to cough, or even feel out of breath or light headed for a short period of time. This is not common and usually is not problematic.
- You may be asked to sign a consent form that gives permission to do the procedure.
- Your height and weight will be recorded before the test. This is done so that your results can be accurately calculated.
Please call to reschedule the test if you are coming down with a cold or the flu.
