Eye examinations are recommended at least every 2 years for healthy adults and annually for children, seniors and people with diabetes.

A comprehensive eye examination includes not only checking your vision and whether you need glasses or not, but also a thorough examination of your binocular vision, eye muscle function and the health of the front and the back of the eyes.  Certain eye diseases such as glaucoma often do not have any symptoms and thus can only be detected through regular eye examinations. Also, systemic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, MS, thyroid disease or autoimmune disorders have the potential to affect your eyes.

In November 2004, eye examinations for adults aged 20-64 were de-insured from the Ontario Health Insurance Plan. However, currently most private insurance plans offer some coverage for eye examinations. OHIP continues to cover annual eye examinations for children up to the age of 19 and seniors over the age of 65, as well as for adults with certain conditions such as diabetes. Also, adults who are currently receiving benefits under the Ontario Works or Ontario Disabilities programs are entitled to an eye examination once every two years. The fee for a full eye examination at Albany Medical Clinic is $95.
